Walk and Talk Support

Walk and Talk Support is a concept that can be best described as taking traditional counselling or supervision sessions outdoors whilst moving. It is an alternate way of accessing support outside of the traditional room-based environment and provides you with an opportunity to spend more time outdoors.

Research indicates that being out in nature is associated with the following:

  • Positive affect
  • Decreased mental distress
  • Better self-reported wellbeing
  • A sense of meaning and purpose
  • More satisfying social interactions
  • Improved attention, memory and adaptability

Walk and Talk Support will require you to have your first session in the office or via Telehealth. This is to ensure that we are confident that you are not being placed at risk with the service and that you understand the limitations, including confidentiality, of Walk and Talk Support.

Currently Walk and Talk Support is available from our Hobart Office.

What are the benefits of Walk and Talk Support?

Physical Health Benefits

Exercise: Walking is a form of moderate exercise, which can have physical health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, better circulation, and increased energy levels.

Endorphin Release: Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. This can help reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression during and after the session.

Promotes Healthy Habits: If you struggle with physical activity, incorporating walking into your sessions can encourage a healthier lifestyle. It sets a positive example of integrating physical exercise into daily routines

Mental Health & Cognitive Benefits

Reduction in Anxiety and Depression: Physical movement can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has been shown to have a positive effect on mental health, potentially leading to more effective outcomes.

Improved Focus and Clarity: Walking can stimulate creative thinking and problem-solving. The act of moving can help you to think more clearly and articulate your thoughts better.

Relaxed Atmosphere

Less Formal Setting: Walking side by side rather than sitting face-to-face can feel less intimidating, helping you feel more at ease. This can lead to more open and honest conversations which can improve outcomes.

Natural Environment: Being outdoors, surrounded by nature, can have a calming effect. Exposure to natural settings has been shown to reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.

Awareness of Surroundings: Walking outdoors can heighten a client’s awareness of their environment, encouraging you to be present and mindful. This practice can help you learn to focus on the present moment, a key component in mindfulness.

Breaking the Routine

Change of Scenery: Traditional counselling and supervisions sessions are often held in the same room, which can become monotonous. Walking sessions provide a change of environment, which can be refreshing and prevent feelings of stagnation.

New Perspectives: Experiencing different surroundings during each session can bring new perspectives, both literally and metaphorically, which can facilitate the exploration of different aspects of issues being discussed.

Symbolic of Progress: Working therapeutically outdoors can help with feelings of being “stuck”, as we are moving forwards in the sessions physically and there is the sense of looking forward to the changes that you want from the sessions.
